Roman Ondák Measuring the Universe opens today at MoMA on the second floor.
Viewers play a vital role in the creation of Measuring the Universe (2007), by Slovakian artist Roman Ondák (b. 1966). Over the course of the exhibition, attendants mark Museum visitors’ heights, first names, and date of the measurement on the gallery walls. Beginning as an empty white space, over time the gallery gradually accumulates the traces of thousands of people.
This is fun. You should go today or tomorrow, when the walls are still pretty clear and then again in September towards the end of the exhibition and see where you stand (literally) compared to all the other art goers in New York.
I started this in our studio winter quarter! Lauren said she was taller than me, and she’s over 4” shorter than me, so I had to prove it to her. We walked over to one of the large pillars and marked our heights, and taped a pencil up and nearly everyone in studio marked themselves and signed it as well.
